The Diamond Guide
Color
Color refers to the absence and presence of the color in the diamond. The color of a diamond is a result of the diamond’s composition and does not change with time. Truly colorless diamonds are quite rare and they are amongst the most desirable and valuable stones. The GIA D-to-Z scale is the industry standard for color grading diamonds, describes the normal color range of diamonds from D for the colorless diamonds and up to Z for the light yellow or brown diamonds.
Cut
Cut is dictated by how a diamond’s facets interact with light. The quality of the diamond cut is an essential part of the 4Cs of diamonds and has the greatest influence on a diamond’s beauty and sparkle. Excellent cut diamonds have proportions that give the highest levels of brilliance and fire. Each of the facets is so perfect, almost all light that passes through them is entirely reflected. Poorly cut diamonds look dull because light enters the stone but don't reflect back to produce brailliance.
Clarity
Carat refers to the weight of a diamond. It's one of the prime factors that determine the value of the diamonds. However, carat weight doesn't necessarily mean a larger looking diamond. Even diamonds of the same weight can differ based on other factors, especially cut that influences perceived size. In general, large diamonds are rare to find and much in demand as compared to small diamonds even of the same quality.
